Production Operations Engineer: our traineeship

The Groningen asset is the backbone of the Dutch energy system and important in the energy transition. The asset and NAM as a whole have a set of tough challenges to take on. The team operates in a complex political field with many stakeholders. Groningen is a fully automated gas field, it is renowned within Shell for its novel ways to work with big data.

There is a culture where there is ample room for innovation. In fact the very reason we need you is to bring the changes we still need. Start your career in a front-line role in the production of natural gas You will work in the field and get first-hand experience with operating a gas facility.

You work closely with our experienced Operators and they will teach you everything they know about the production of natural gas. They will coach you throughout your training and progressively let you work more independently. You will earn these new responsibilities at a high pace!

Part of your tasks will be to create a safe work environment, stakeholder management with NAM and contractor staff, and with the neighbours of our production locations.

Your first year of fieldwork involves two main activities:

  1. Operation: Controlling the production of natural gas, monitoring the facility (from the control room and outside!) and investigating equipment failures
  2. Maintenance: Preparing the facility for maintenance and supervising the maintenance staff as they work on ?your? facility. You are in charge and responsible for everyone?s safety!

After proving yourself in the field you will progressively assist the Production Supervisors in their work, with the goal of becoming a Supervisor yourself upon completing the Graduate Programme. The Supervisors are responsible for all 22 production facilities and 258 wells in the Groningen gas system, as well as dozens of other facilities and pipelines. Their task is to keep these plants in perfect operational condition so that we can supply the Dutch energy market without interruption.

Your role in this is to analyse the performance and suggest improvements in terms of efficiency, reliability, safety, costs or otherwise. You will then lead many of these improvement projects yourself. What we have to offer Working as a Production Engineer with NAM

Groningen is both challenging and rewarding. The front-line experience with Shell?s upstream activities will prove an ideal start to your career and open countless possibilities within the company. Among the many career choices for a graduate engineer, this is a unique opportunity to gain extremely valuable, hands-on experience with the core of Shell?s upstream activities: the production of hydrocarbons and delivery to our customers.
