Within the legal assessment instrument (WBI2017), only the upper 0,5 m of the grass cover of levees can be taken into account as strength. Any erosion-resistant (clay) layers present underneath cannot be included in calculations, while these are often present. This led us to the following question:
?How can we consider the residual strength of a levee with a failed grass cover on the outer slope??
Arcadis would like to investigate this for waterboards for which it carries out many projects. The following sub-questions are relevant:
- What has been done with the underlying knowledge of VTV2006 and TR Steenzetting?
- How can a probabilistic approach be shaped? At what time does the grass cover fail during a storm, at the beginning, at the end or anytime in between?
- How can residual strength be properly embedded in the flood risk approach?

For this graduation internship we are looking for a student with the following competences:
- You study Civil Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Geo Engineering, Water Management or something similar.
Further important details are:
- Some documentation is written in Dutch so professional reading and writing knowledge of the Dutch language is required;
- You can work on your assignment at the nearest office, at a workplace at the University or from home;
- Period that the research must be carried out: second half of 2019 and first part of 2020.
